Changing Your Belts, Hoses, Fluids and Filters

May 8, 2012 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

The best way to ensure that your auto stays in running condition is with proper maintenance. Preventing problems before they start will help you keep your car on the road, and will keep it in top shape to be reliable no matter what the conditions.

Oil – oil is the lifeblood of your automobile. If your oil is low, you need to add the additional fluid right away. Low levels can also be a sign of a possible problem, such as a leak. You should change the oil in your car every 3,000 miles. This will help keep your motor is tip-top shape for all of your driving needs. Make sure you change the oil filter each time you change the oil.

Transmission – do not forget to check your transmission fluid on a regular schedule. Pay attention to the color of the fluid, as well as the level. Under normal driving conditions, the transmission fluid should be changed about every 50,000 miles.

Coolant – the coolant in your car should be checked at regular intervals. If the coolant is low, you may have a leak. As with the transmission fluid, pay attention to the color and condition of the coolant. If it is discolored or appears to have sediment, your system should be flushed and new coolant added.

Fuel and air filters – air filters capture dust and other particles and prevent them from coming into the car. These should be changed about once a year. Fuel filters should be replaced every couple of years, unless you have an older car. In this case, your fuel tank may contain “crud” that can clog the fuel filter. Changing the filter and cleaning the tank can eliminate this problem.

Belts and hoses – you should inspect belts and hoses for any visible damage, such as fraying or cracking. If you notice visible damage, replace the belt as soon as possible. Inspect your belts and hoses on a regular basis, such as once a month or when you have your oil changed. Make sure your replacement belts and hoses are designed to fit your car.
