Should You Try Auto Repair Yourself?

March 30, 2012 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

If you are doing a little research and trying to determine if you should do auto repair yourself, the most likely reason for this is because you are trying to save money. With a little knowledge and skill, you may be able to do a few of the most common auto repairs yourself.

Yet a professional auto repair shop isn’t there to take all of your money; instead they are there to save you time AND ensure your repair is done correctly the first time. They have the tools, parts, knowledge and skills to get the job done quickly without leaving you questioning what truly is wrong.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while now, you know I fill it with tips to keep your auto in great condition. In many cases your problem could require a simple solution. Below are a variety of auto repair articles I’ve written over the last few months, each designed to provide you with specific information on the upkeep of your car. Take a look to determine what is the right answer for you and your auto. And if you have any questions, just call. We would be happy to provide you with expert advice and help you make an informed decision on what it will truly cost to do your own auto repair.

How Often Should I Change My Automotive Brakes?
Have a question about how long your automotive brakes will last on your car? There are a couple of things to consider.

What’s So Important About An Oil Filter?
In the course of our business, we are often confronted with customers who don’t understand the importance of their oil filter.  They are usually focused on the quality of the oil and the cost of the oil change and don’t really see what’s so important about an oil filter?

Motor Oil Types – How To Choose The Right One For Your Car
When you walk into a quick-lube and ask for an oil change today, you will usually be asked what type of motor oil you want to use.  Because cars have changed, the motor oil we put in them has changed too.  Here are the motor oil types available and a brief description of the difference between them.  This information should help you choose the right motor oil for your car.

Radiator Flush
During the winter months when the temperatures can be as cold as below zero and in the summer when the temperatures can be so hot you’re sweltering, it is crucial your heating and cooling system is working properly.  These are the perfect times to have a radiator flush performed on your vehicle.

Is It Time For A Cooling System Flush?
More than the comfort and convenience of being able to control the temperature inside your vehicle, your car’s heating and cooling systems are necessary in preventing your vehicle from breaking down due to extremely high operating temperatures.

Shocks and Struts – How You Know When They Need Replacing
Have an older car? Want to keep it in the best shape possible? It’s time to purchase new shocks and struts if your original shocks and struts are worn out, damaged or leaking. Leaking is easy enough to see – just look for oil or wetness on the outside of the shock or strut. Damage is also fairly easy to see – look for a broken mount, badly dented housing, etc. But wear is often more of a subjective thing to judge.

How To Determine If Your Car Transmission Needs Repair
No one likes to hear the dreaded words, “Your transmission is blown.” Your cars transmission is responsible for most of its engine functions and capabilities. As soon as a car’s transmission requires repair, most car owners see dollar signs adding up. Catching a transmission problem before it becomes a transmission disaster could be the difference between a five hundred dollar fix and a five thousand dollar overhaul. Stay on top of your transmission by keeping an eye out for key signs of transmission trouble.
