7 Things To Think About At The Auto Repair Shop

April 13, 2012 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

Running in to your local auto repair shop for a quick oil change is easy. Yet what happens when your oil change turns into something more? Instead of being surprised the next time you are told about a major auto repair from a shop you aren’t familiar with, go in prepared. Instead of saying “yes” to whatever surprises they throw at you, have your own set of responses to make sure you are getting the kind of service you deserve.

1. Start by looking at the condition of the auto repair shop. A good mechanic will make sure his equipment and the area he works in organized, clean and in good working condition. You won’t find old parts stacked in the corner, and trash strewn across the floor. This is his business and he should be showcasing a professional look for his customers.

2. Estimates should be a fact of life. When you drop off your car for one reason, the written estimate should cover work realted to that service alone. If additional problems are discovered, make sure you will be contacted with a quote before any work is done. This should include parts and labor. Never accept surprises. [Read more…]

Use Your Senses As An Auto Repair Guide

March 23, 2012 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

We are all familiar with the “mechanic scenario”.  Your car has finally caused enough trouble you take it to the shop.  You hand over your keys with a hope and a prayer that they will be able to fix your car without breaking your wallet.  Yet you have no idea how to explain what is wrong.

If you are the “non-mechanical” type, here are a few things you can do with simple observations to help maintain your car.  With your five senses (and a little common sense) you can get an idea of what is wrong with your car before you bring it in. And have basic knowledge to understand how to explain it to your mechanic.

Sight – Sight is probably the easiest sense to integrate.  You already use this sense to tell you when your car needs gas or when one of the dash lights comes on.  In addition to these simple steps, as you walk to your car, look to see if anything is hanging from the undercarriage.  Plastic protective covers can easily be reattached if they are discovered in time.  Is the tailpipe bent?  This could be signs of an exhaust leak.  Are their fluids leaking onto the pavement?  Any fluid leaking enough to leave a mark on the pavement (aside from condensation from AC) needs to be looked at by a mechanic. Five Tools Every Auto Owner Needs

March 7, 2012 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

Everyone needs to have a great team on their side. An accountant for handling taxes each year. A painter for painting you home inside and out. An auto mechanic to rely on for regular maintenance as well as emergency repairs.

Yet in addition to your team, chances are you’ll do things on your own as well.

While you’ll probably bring your car into your reliable auto repair shop for most issues, there may be the day when you have to pop the hood and handle a few things on your own.

For those moments, here are five tools you should have on hand for the “just in case” moments.

Jack – While every car owner may have the desire to handle situations by driving to the nearest repair shop, there may be a time when you have to do things yourself. If you are running around town and walk out to the parking lot to find a flat tire, a jack might be just the thing you need to fix it yourself. [Read more…]

Simple Auto Repair and Maintenance Tips

March 2, 2012 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

Have you decided to keep your old car instead of buying a new one? You are not alone. Many people today are looking for ways to save. If your automobile is in great shape and only a few years old, it makes sense to avoid the monthly payments and the increased insurance premiums, and invest in a little auto repair and maintenance items instead.

One of the most important words in your car’s maintenance schedule can be summed up in one word … routine! You brush your teeth every evening for bed. You get your hair trimmed on a regular basis. Your auto maintenance should be just as routine.

Until it becomes a routine, it may be beneficial to mark it on the calendar. Schedule days to fit in with your normal routine; days when you can devote time to bringing your car in to a trusted auto mechanic – or do some of it yourself. Here is a list of regular auto maintenance items.

Monthly

Every month, check your brake, power steering, transmission, antifreeze and windshield washer fluids. While not all of these need to be changed each month, putting it into your routine can allow you to find problems before they turn into something more.

You should also check your tire pressure, and see if your head and tail lights are in working order. [Read more…]

How To Choose An Auto Repair Shop

February 27, 2012 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

When you own a car, it is important to have regular maintenance performed. It is also important to have a trusted, reliable mechanic to perform this maintenance, as well as to repair any other problems.

Choosing an auto repair shop can be a bit of a chore because they are not created equal. You want to choose an auto repair shop that will not gouge you with high prices and will give you quality repair work. The truth is that there are some repair shops that do not practice good business. The following tips will help you choose the right auto repair shop for your needs.

Choose your repair shop BEFORE you have any automobile problems. You want to make an informed choice, not one under the stress of a malfunctioning vehicle. If your car is not running, you are more likely to do business with the first repair shop you find – which could have disastrous effects, not only on your car but on your wallet. Do your research and find your repair shop before you experience car trouble. Try them out with small jobs, like an oil change. This way you can talk with the service department and begin developing a relationship before you need larger repairs. [Read more…]

Do I Need An Auto Repair Shop To Replace My Clutch?

February 24, 2012 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

We had a great question come in this past week.

“The clutch on my manual car has been making all kinds of noises. Do I need an auto repair shop to replace my clutch, or is it something I can do myself?”

While many people enjoy driving a manual car, few actually understanding how they work.

In your automobile, your engine spins all the time, while your wheels do not. The clutch is the device to smoothly engage a spinning engine to the non-spinning transmission, controlling the slippage between them. Your clutch is used to regulate the power from the engine to the transfer of power to both the transmission and the wheels.

Regardless of whether you drive a manual or an automatic, the principle remains the same. Because your clutch is the vital component that allows your auto to run smoothly, replacing it at the proper time can literally be a lifesaver. Here are three warning signs:

Burning Smell
Your automobile might emit a burning smell, similar to the smell of burning rubber or an electrical fire. In some cases it may also generate smoke.

Sticking Clutch
As the hydraulic linkages fail, your clutch will come under more pressure. When you notice the pedals becoming harder to press or disengage, it may be an indication of clutch failure.

Slipping Out Of Gear
If the clutch is worn or there in an oil leak from the crankshaft to the clutch plate, your vehicle may slip out of gear for no apparent reason. You may also notice jerky movements as you operate your car.

While this is not a comprehensive list of the things that can go wrong, chances are if your clutch is in need of repair, you’ve noticed at least one of these items.

Replacing your own clutch can be difficult at best. On a rear wheel drive vehicle, the driveshaft, transmission and bellhousing have to be removed from underneath the vehicle to get to the clutch. For a front wheel drive, replacing the clutch is even more challenging because it involves pulling the engine or dropping the transaxle.

What may take an auto repair shop hours to accomplish may be a never-ending chore for you. If you have any questions about your clutch, let Express Car Care have your auto running again in no time.

The Importance of Finding a Family Owned Auto Repair Shop

February 12, 2011 by Denver Express Car Care Leave a Comment

Car repairs can drive you crazy, and the thought of the cost can make your stomach swell with butterflies.  The first question that enters your mind is, “can I trust this shop to do right by me?”  If the answer is “no” then you need some tips on how to find the right repair shop for your needs.

Start by asking family or friends where they take their cars for repair and what their experience was like.  You will probably discover that the majority of them used a family owned local shop because they can trust the advice – the owner is there and has to build up his reputation.     The Importance of Finding a Family Owned Auto Repair Shop

Dealerships or franchise repair shops may be locally owned but they have a corporate bottom line that a family owned shop does not.  The family owned shop has a vested interest in the community it operates in, their professional reputation depends on providing fair quotes and repairs that are done right the first time and are more likely to happen than with a dealer ship or franchise operated business.

The local mechanic is more familiar with his customer base, the types of cars his customers drive and he has the ability and interest in developing a relationship with each individual he comes in contact with.  He is also more apt to be honest about whether a particular repair is necessary or if it can be done at all.  He is not likely to risk his business or reputation doing unnecessary repairs just to make a dollar.  Word of mouth carries a great deal of weight and it doesn’t take but one unhappy customer to damage a business.

Using a family owned repair shop allows both the business and customer to develop a sense of trust that is hard to find these days.  If something is not repaired correctly, on time, and in accordance with the original cost quote, your redress would not include having to deal with a corporate structure that can be confusing and irritating.  You can have a face to face with a family owned repair shop and come to a mutually satisfactory resolution and still be friends.
