Are Additives In Motor Oil Important?

You know car maintenance is important. Some projects easily filter into your to-do list – you no longer have to think about them. 

Like stopping for gas. Or ensuring your tires are properly pressurized. 

Or changing the motor oil. 

Most of us stop for an oil change when the little sticker in the window tells us we’ve reached a specific mileage. But have you ever stopped to think about why? Or what’s in motor oil that makes it beneficial for your vehicle? (Yes, motor oil additives are essential!)

Let’s dig in!

This is why your car needs motor oil

Motor oil is also referred to frequently as engine oil. It’s a lubricant used in internal combustion engines to reduce friction and wear between moving parts. 

It’s designed to lubricate the engine components, such as the pistons, bearings, and camshaft, to ensure smooth operation and minimize friction-related heat. It also helps:

  • Dissipate heat generated during engine operation, preventing components from overheating.
  • Keep the engine clean by carrying away contaminants and deposits, preventing sludge build-up and maintaining engine cleanliness.
  • Form a film between the moving parts, helping to create a seal and prevent leaks.
  • Provides a protective layer to prevent corrosion of engine components.

Now imagine what would happen if you didn’t add motor oil regularly. 

Are Additives In Motor Oil Important?

Every part would be impacted. The friction and wear would occur gradually over time as each part moved a little slower, and didn’t work quite as designed. 

More friction means more heat. If you drive a lot and this continues, heat may build and lead to overheating. And that can bring a lot of problems inside the engine compartment. 

This doesn’t happen quickly. Instead, it’s a slow build-up of sludge, dirt, and debris, gradually contaminating the motor oil and negatively impacting the engine. Which leads to poor fuel efficiency, increased emissions, more costly repairs, and eventual engine failure. 

Whew! 

All from not paying attention to your motor oil. Who knew a little can of motor oil could do so much for your car. 

What’s in a can of motor oil?

Here’s where it gets interesting. Motor oil is more than just another liquid. 

New, clean motor oil is typically amber or light brown. However, as it ages and accumulates contaminants, it can darken and appear black. The color can also be influenced by the additives and base oil used in the formulation. High-quality synthetic oils may have a clearer, lighter color.

You may notice its mild, characteristic petroleum odor. However, as oil ages and accumulates contaminants, it may develop a stronger, more unpleasant smell. The presence of burnt or acrid odors could indicate overheating or other issues within the engine.

Motor oil is designed to have a specific viscosity, which is a measure of its thickness or resistance to flow. It’s often labeled with two numbers, such as 10W-30. The first indicates the oil’s viscosity at low temperatures, while the second indicates the viscosity at high temperatures. The consistency can range from relatively thin to more viscous, depending on the oil’s intended use and operating conditions. 

What’s in motor oil? It can vary depending on the specific formulation, brand, and intended use (conventional, synthetic, or a blend). However, motor oil typically consists of a base oil and additives. Here’s what’s in each:

Base Oil

The base oil is the primary component of motor oil and makes up the majority of its volume. It can be derived from crude oil or synthesized chemically. The base oil provides the lubricating properties necessary to reduce friction and wear between moving engine parts. The quality and type of base oil (conventional, synthetic, or semi-synthetic) significantly influence the performance of the motor oil.

Additives

Motor oil contains various additives to enhance its performance and provide additional benefits. These additives include:

  • Detergents and Dispersants – These additives help keep the engine clean by preventing the formation of deposits and sludge. They disperse and suspend contaminants, allowing them to be carried away during oil changes.
  • Anti-Wear Agents – These additives form a protective film on metal surfaces, reducing friction and minimizing wear on engine components.
  • Viscosity Index Improvers – These additives help stabilize the viscosity of the oil over a range of temperatures. This ensures that the oil maintains its effectiveness in lubricating the engine under different operating conditions.
  • Antioxidants – These additives help prevent the oil from oxidizing and breaking down, extending the oil’s life and maintaining its properties over time.
  • Corrosion Inhibitors – These additives protect engine components from corrosion by forming a protective layer on metal surfaces.
  • Foam Inhibitors – These additives help prevent the formation of foam, ensuring efficient lubrication and preventing air entrainment in the oil.
  • Pour Point Depressants – These additives improve the low-temperature flow characteristics of the oil, preventing it from thickening in cold conditions.
  • Friction Modifiers – These additives reduce friction between moving parts, improving fuel efficiency.

Why your car needs motor oil additives

With everything we do and have in our world today, we can look back over time and see how it’s a little better than in the past. We learn. We grow. And we make things better. 

Motor oil has had that progression, too. 

Go back to the very first cars and motor oil was a base ingredient with little in it. Over time, we’ve learned to add things that make it better – better for your car, better for the environment, better for efficiency. 

Today’s motor oil additives are essential team players dedicated to keeping your car’s engine in top shape. These additives each contribute unique benefits. 

Take the detergent and dispersant combo, for instance. They actively prevent the accumulation of deposits and sludge, maintaining the engine’s cleanliness. What was once difficult or even impossible, today is handled through additives within the motor oil itself. 

Then there’s the anti-wear agent, a vital component forming a protective layer on metal surfaces, minimizing friction and preventing premature wear on critical engine parts. That’s just one reason the average age of a car on the road is creeping upwards every year. 

Yes, additives are a good thing. Your car’s engine can’t survive without motor oil. But increasingly, it can’t function well over time without motor oil additives.

All of that is possible thanks to car batteries. This one little invention changed our world forever. Can you even imagine life without a car? While that might be possible in walkable cities, it’s hard to imagine in Colorado. 

Why car batteries are important

A car battery is a rechargeable energy storage device that provides electrical energy to start the engine and power various electrical components in a vehicle. It plays a crucial role in the overall functioning of a car.

A car battery’s ultimate goal is to supply a burst of electrical power to the starter motor, which then cranks the engine and initiates the combustion process. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over the task of generating electrical power, and it also charges the battery.

Without car batteries, you couldn’t:

  • Start the Engine – The primary function of a car battery is to provide the initial electrical energy required to start the engine. When you turn the key or push the ignition button, the battery sends a surge of power to the starter motor, enabling the engine to crank and start.
  • Operate Electrical Accessories – Car batteries serve as a source of electrical power when the vehicle is not running or when the electrical demand exceeds what the alternator can supply. Think about your own actions in winter. You move a little slower, stretch a little more, spend a little more time relaxing.

Your car reacts similarly. Those cold temperatures can make everything inside your car a little more sluggish. 

  • Reduced Battery Performance – Cold temperatures can significantly reduce a car battery’s ability to deliver power. Chemical reactions in the battery that generate electricity slow down in cold weather. As a result, the battery may not provide enough power to crank the engine.
  • Increased Engine Oil Viscosity – Cold temperatures cause engine oil to become thicker and more viscous. Thick oil is harder for the engine to pump, which can make it more difficult to turn over, especially during startup.
  • Stiffening of Lubricants and Fluids – Other fluids in the vehicle, such as transmission fluid and brake fluid, can also become thicker in cold weather. This can affect the overall efficiency of various components in the vehicle.
  • Cold Air Intake – Cold air is denser than warm air, and a cold air intake system can lead to a richer air-fuel mixture. While this is generally beneficial for engine performance, frigid temperatures may cause difficulties in starting.
  • Fuel Combustion Challenges – Cold temperatures can make the fuel-air mixture more difficult to ignite. Additionally, fuel may not vaporize as effectively in cold weather, affecting combustion efficiency.
  • Frozen Fuel Lines – In icy conditions, moisture in the fuel system can freeze, leading to blockages in fuel lines. This can impede the flow of fuel to the engine and cause starting issues.
  • Challenges with Spark Plugs – Cold temperatures can make it more difficult for the spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture. Spark plugs need to generate sufficient heat to initiate combustion, and extreme cold can hinder this process.

Battery tips to keep your car running smoothly all winter long

You can’t avoid winter. (Unless you move.) And your car will react differently as you carry on with your daily activities throughout the cold weather months. 

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things you can do. 

  • Check the Battery – Regularly inspect the battery for signs of corrosion or loose connections. Clean any corrosion with a mixture of baking soda and water.
  • Ensure that the battery terminals are tight and secure.
  • Perform a Battery Test – Use a battery tester to check the state of charge and overall health of the battery. Many automotive stores offer free battery testing services. Or you can stop by and we’d be happy to perform an inspection. 
  • Keep the Battery Charged – Cold temperatures can reduce a battery’s efficiency. If possible, park your car in a garage to provide some insulation from the cold.
  • Consider using a battery maintainer or trickle charger to keep the battery charged when the vehicle is not in use for extended periods.
  • Use a Battery Blanket or Heater – Install a battery blanket or heater to keep the battery warm during extremely cold weather. This can improve its performance and extend its lifespan.
  • Choose the Right Engine Oil – Use engine oil with the correct viscosity rating for winter. Thinner oil flows more easily in cold temperatures and reduces the strain on the battery during startup.
  • Turn Off Accessories Before Shutting Off the Engine – Before turning off the engine, make sure to turn off all accessories such as lights, radio, and heaters. This reduces the load on the battery during the next startup.
  • Limit Short Trips – Cold starts require more energy from the battery. Limiting short trips can help the alternator recharge the battery fully, ensuring it stays in good condition.
  • Check for Parasitic Drains – Ensure there are no unnecessary electrical loads on the battery when the car is turned off. Check for and fix any parasitic drains that could be draining the battery.
  • Emergency Preparedness – Keep jumper cables or a portable jump starter in your vehicle. In case of a dead battery, these tools can help you or someone else jump-start the vehicle.
  • Consider a Battery with Cold-Cranking Amps – When replacing your battery, choose one with a higher CCA rating, which indicates its ability to start in cold temperatures.

Did you love Saturday morning cartoons when you were young? The Flintstones is a classic. What kid doesn’t love the idea of having a dinosaur for a pet? Or using your feet to start and stop a car?

The concept seems a bit childish when you age and understand just how fast a car goes. Starting a car – maybe. If you’ve ever had to push a car to start it, you realize power comes from forward motion. 

But stopping – that’s altogether different. You need more than feet to stop a car. 

Driving here in Colorado, car brakes are an important part of our daily commute. Whether you sail in and out of the pickup line for your kids, or fly down the highway for a day of skiing with friends, life would be tricky (and treacherous) without brakes. 

But have you ever stopped to think about how they get their stopping power? What makes car brakes work? 

Let’s find out. 

Where car brakes started

The invention and development of car brakes can be attributed to several individuals over time. The early automobiles did not have effective braking systems, and the earliest forms of braking were rudimentary compared to modern standards.

One notable early advancement in automotive brakes was the introduction of mechanical brakes. In the late 19th century, various inventors and automobile pioneers began experimenting with braking systems. One such example is the application of mechanical brakes on the horseless carriage built by Karl Benz, the inventor of the first practical motorcar, in the late 1880s.

However, the early braking systems were often primitive and unreliable. The transition from mechanical brakes to hydraulic brakes, which significantly improved braking efficiency and reliability, occurred over the early decades of the 20th century.

In 1918, Malcolm Loughead (later changed to Lockheed) introduced hydraulic brakes on the Duesenberg automobile. This marked a significant advancement in braking technology, providing more reliable and responsive braking compared to mechanical systems.

As the automotive industry continued to evolve, hydraulic brake systems became more widespread. The development of power-assisted brakes, such as vacuum-assisted and later hydraulic-assisted systems, further improved braking performance and control.

How today’s modern car brakes work

Modern car brake systems primarily rely on hydraulic mechanisms and friction materials to achieve effective deceleration and stopping. The prevalent disc brake system in contemporary vehicles comprises essential components such as brake discs or rotors, brake calipers, brake pads, and a hydraulic system. 

When the driver presses the brake pedal, a hydraulic process is initiated. This begins with the master cylinder, which contains brake fluid and pressurizes it upon pedal depression. The pressurized brake fluid is then directed through brake lines to the brake calipers at each wheel. 

In disc brake setups, the calipers house pistons that, when activated by the brake fluid, squeeze the brake pads against the rotating brake discs. These discs, attached to the wheel hub, generate friction when in contact with the brake pads, converting kinetic energy into heat and ultimately slowing down the vehicle. 

Brake pads are positioned on each side of the brake discs within the calipers. They play a crucial role in this process by providing the necessary friction. The heat produced is managed through ventilation slots in the discs and other cooling features to prevent brake fade. 

Additionally, modern cars often feature advanced systems such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist to enhance safety and control during braking maneuvers. ABS prevents wheel lock-up by modulating brake pressure, while EBD optimizes the distribution of braking force among individual wheels. Brake Assist recognizes emergency braking situations and supplements braking force if the driver doesn’t apply sufficient pressure. 

Overall, modern brake systems are designed for efficiency, reliability, and safety, incorporating advanced technologies to deliver optimal performance.

Brakes work only as well as the driver behind them

According to the Office of Motor Vehicle Management, 98 percent of all car accidents are due to human error. 

Want to be a better driver? Until autonomous vehicles become the norm, the best way is to sharpen your driving practices. This is where you should start. 

  • Anticipate Stops – Be aware of traffic conditions, signals, and road signs well in advance. Anticipating stops allows you to brake gradually and smoothly.
  • Maintain a Safe Following Distance – Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This provides you with more reaction time and space to stop safely.
  • Gradual Braking – Avoid abrupt or sudden braking, as it can lead to skidding or collisions. Gradually apply pressure to the brake pedal to slow down smoothly.
  • Avoid Overusing Brakes on Downgrades – On downhill slopes, use engine braking (shifting to a lower gear) where appropriate to reduce the load on the brakes. This helps prevent brake fade and overheating.
  • Check Brake System Regularly – Ensure that your vehicle’s braking system is well-maintained. Regularly check brake fluid levels, brake pads, and discs. Address any issues promptly.
  • Adapt to Road Conditions – Adjust your stopping distance based on road conditions. Wet or slippery surfaces may require increased stopping distances, so be mindful of the weather and road conditions.
  • Avoid Tailgating – Maintain a safe following distance to allow for unexpected stops by the vehicle in front of you. Tailgating reduces your reaction time and increases the risk of rear-end collisions.
  • Use Turn Signals – Use turn signals to indicate your intention to stop or turn. This alerts drivers behind you and improves overall road safety.
  • Stay Alert at Intersections – Be particularly vigilant at intersections. Look for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles before proceeding or stopping.
  • Practice Defensive Driving – Stay aware of your surroundings, anticipate the actions of other drivers, and be prepared to react to unexpected situations.

And above all, check your brake system regularly. You can do this by paying attention to the way your brakes perform. Notice a difference in sound, touch, or odor? It’s time to bring it in for inspection. Have a dashboard light illuminated? Don’t ignore it; it’s a sign something is wrong.

Low Coolant

A fundamental cause for overheating is low coolant levels, depriving the engine of the essential medium that absorbs and dispels heat through the radiator. Coolant levels can drop due to leaks, evaporation, or simply over time with usage. Regularly checking and maintaining coolant levels are paramount to ensuring a consistent temperature within the engine.

Coolant Leak

Leaks can occur in several locations within the cooling system: the radiator, hoses, water pump, head gasket, or thermostat housing. Traces of dried coolant, usually bright green, pink, or orange, may hint towards a leak source. Leaks contribute to decreased coolant levels, diminishing the system’s ability to manage engine temperature.

Low Coolant Pressure

Optimal coolant pressure ensures the fluid efficiently travels through the cooling system, absorbing, and discharging heat. The pressure cap maintains this pressure, and its failure or a leak within the system can jeopardize the pressure stability, impairing cooling capabilities.

Low Oil

Engine oil wears many hats, one of which includes absorbing excess heat from the engine. When oil levels plummet, its ability to act as a heat absorber is compromised, placing additional heat management demands on the coolant and, in tandem, accelerating wear on moving parts due to insufficient lubrication.

Thermostat Problems

Acting as the cooling system’s regulator, the thermostat controls the coolant flow between the engine and the radiator. A malfunctioning thermostat may fail to open, hindering coolant flow and causing the engine to overheat. Its consistent performance is crucial for maintaining an equilibrium in engine temperature.

Broken Fan

The fan assists in maintaining a steady temperature in the radiator and, subsequently, the engine. A malfunctioning fan, due to a faulty motor, damaged fan belt, or debris, compromises the system’s cooling efficacy, allowing heat to build up within the engine.

Damaged Radiator

Broken Water Pump

Often dubbed the heart of the cooling system, the water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. Its failure, through a leak, broken impeller, or shaft issues, disrupts coolant flow, jeopardizing the entire cooling process.

That’s a lot that can go wrong! But don’t worry; maintenance is key to prevention. That’s why it’s important to find a trustworthy auto repair shop early in your ownership, and partner with them to ensure your car runs smoothly.
